Complementary Therapies
At the Hospice we provide a range of complementary therapies, with the emphasis on relieving pain and making the patient feel as comfortable as possible - helping them to live with their illness.
Massage Therapy is a generic term for a variety of techniques that involve touching, pressing, kneading and manipulation of the soft tissues of the body for therapeutic purposes.
Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese medical procedure involving insertion of fine needles into the skin and the underlying tissues at specific points, for therapeutic or preventative purposes. The needles are inserted at suitable points on the body to manage pain and symptoms, to correct the body's energy flow and restore balance.
Reflexology is a form of complementary medicine and involves a method of treatment using massage to reflex areas found in the feet and the hands. Most commonly, the feet are used as the areas to be treated. It is thought that illness occurs when 'energy channels' in the body are blocked, causing damage to one area or another. Massage is aimed at destroying these blocks, allowing energy to flow freely again and so to heal the damage.
Aromatherapy is the systematic use of essential oils in treatments to improve physical and emotional well-being. Many plant species contains essential oils, highly fragrant and flammable essences, which evaporate quickly and which are extracted from plants by a distillation process. The therapeutic effect of aromatherapy results from a combination of the physiological effects of the oils, and the relaxation of massage.
