In-patient Unit

Key Benefits

  • The hospice's in-patient unit has 6 community palliative care beds.
  • We provide respite care, pain and symptom management for patients here in our base at The Woodlands

What is Inpatient Care?

The community palliative care beds at St Teresa's Hospice offer respite and palliative support. This means that some patients will have local access to beds, at the same time retaining contact with their regular District Nursing team and their own GP. This encourages continuity of care with easy access to the Specialist Palliative Care Team (Consultant in Palliative Medicine and Macmillan nurses), based at the hospice.

Why Would I Need Inpatient Care?

The criteria for Inpatient admission relates to the provision of:

  • short term respite care
  • terminal care, if this is seen to be the best option for the patient
  • regular surveillance of pain and symptom management which require more supervision than can be achieved at home

How Do I Access This Service?

You will be referred to the Hospice by your District Nurse -this will be a joint decision with your GP.

While you are in the Hospice, your District Nurse and GP will continue to visit you as though you were at home.

If specialist advice is required, there is access to our Consultant and to the Macmillan Nurses.

You will be looked after by specially-trained Marie Curie Nurses and Hospice Support Staff.

St Teresa's Hospice Inpatient care team is actively committed to helping you and those who care for you to cope with your illness. The development of this project was made possible by the formation of a partnership between Darlington Primary Care Trust, Marie Curie Cancer Care and St Teresa's Hospice.
