Hospice Care Week 2016 A Success

Hospice Care Week 2016 was a resounding success and saw us joining over 200 hospices across the UK to raise awareness of the care we provide in our local community.

One in three people will be touched by hospice care at some point in their lives, and we used the week to show that we are there to support people to live life as fully as possible.

Staff and volunteers throughout the Hospice were involved, with our Day Hospice and In Patient nurses getting out and about to chat to shoppers in the Cornmill Centre and Sainsbury’s, on Victoria Road.

Giving away a free cookie to show that all of our services are available free of charge, our team were able to let more people know that the Hospice is here whenever it is needed. Some of the feedback was wonderful – thank you to everyone who stopped for a chat!

The theme ‘hospice care is…’ was used as a basis for activities in our Day Hospice and our patients joined in by dressing in pink (to match the Hospice Care Week logo) and completing cards to make a display showing what hospice care means to them. This display will stand in the unit for all to see.

Our chain of shops took on the challenge of creating a themed window display, using items they have for sale to represent the various aspects of the care we provide. Staff and volunteers also shared pictures of themselves with their ‘hospice acre is...’ cards on social media.

Every year we offer care and support to thousands of people in South Durham & North Yorkshire. Hospice care is vital for so many people and we hope that this Hospice Care Week we have shown just how varied and surprising our work can be.
