We joined hospices across the UK recently to celebrate Hospice Care Week (8-14 October), a national campaign to raise awareness of the vital work we do in the heart of the communities we serve.
Patients, volunteers and staff all got involved, and those who have benefitted from the thousands of hours of care and support provided every year were inspired to tell their stories.
Nurses from our Community Hospice team ran a pop-up information stall in Darlington’s Cornmill Centre, talking to shoppers about the vital work they do and encouraging people to get involved by volunteering. Their involvement attracted heartfelt messages of appreciation on our Facebook page from relatives of patients who had been cared for at home.
Day Hospice briefly turned yellow for the week, as patients and staff alike donned the campaign’s theme colours to show their support. Patients produced a #HeartMyHospice display which collected messages of support and gratitude towards the Day Hospice team and wider Hospice.
Our Retail team pulled out all the stops to create some vibrant window displays to visually represent the theme and to get customers talking. Love hearts, Hospice Care Week messages, and yellow items of all descriptions adorned windows across our catchment area.
Many Hospice supporters also backed the campaign, including Sainsbury’s Darlington Superstore where shoppers were encouraged to donate when they reached the checkout. Generous customers gave nearly £300!
Rounding off the week was a street collection in aid of the Hospice, on World Hospice & Palliative Care Day, Saturday 13th October. Despite the poor weather, fundraising volunteers braved the elements to collect over £300 in donations and to shout about the important work of the Hospice.
